Core Web Vitals in 2026: What Changed and How to Optimize


In the modern web, speed is no longer just a subjective feeling. Google measures website performance through Core Web Vitals, a set of metrics that directly influence search engine rankings (SEO) and conversion rates.

In 2026, Google’s algorithm has become even stricter and more precise in evaluating real User Experience. It is no longer enough to fool laboratory tests; you must offer a fluid experience to users on their physical devices.

Let’s look in detail at what Core Web Vitals measure today, how to analyze them, and how I optimize them in my projects using Astro.

The 3 Fundamental Metrics

1. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) - Loading Speed

LCP measures the time it takes for the largest visible element (a hero image, a video, or a text block) to render on the screen. For Google, an optimal LCP must be under 2.5 seconds.

How to optimize it:

  • Critical Preload: I instruct the browser to load crucial images first (like the hero image) by inserting a <link rel="preload"> tag in the head.
  • Next-Gen Formats: I strictly use compressed images in modern formats like .webp or .avif.
  • Hosting and CDN: Relying on fast Edge servers ensures that the initial HTML document reaches the client in milliseconds.

2. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) - Responsiveness

INP replaced the old FID, becoming the definitive metric for measuring responsiveness. It evaluates the latency of all user interactions (clicks, taps, keyboard inputs) across the entire page lifespan, not just the first one. An optimal INP is under 200 milliseconds.

How to optimize it (The Astro Advantage): The number one enemy of INP is a Main Thread blocked by huge JavaScript bundles that the browser must execute. Astro solves this problem at the root by shipping zero JavaScript by default to the browser. Thanks to the Islands Architecture, the site is made of pure HTML.   • Explicit Dimensions: I always define width and height attributes on every image and iframe. This way, the browser reserves the necessary space even before the image is downloaded.
  • Font Fallback: I avoid text flickering (FOIT/FOUT) by using font-display: swap and preloading critical fonts.

Lab Data vs. Field Data

One of the most common mistakes is relying exclusively on Lighthouse run from your own browser. Lighthouse provides simulated lab data.

To truly understand your site’s health, you must look at field data from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), visible through PageSpeed Insights or Google Search Console. This data reflects the real experience of your users based on their connections and smartphones.
